Would a wide angled lens solve this problem?
I was photographing a train on a bridge during the week. To get the whole bridge in, I had to stand some way back. Consequently the foregrond is in focus, but the train has barely reader names or owners fleetnames. Would a wide angle lens allow all of the image to be razor sharp?
Yes and no.
Yes because you can be closer to the whole bridge and train as it passes.
No, because although the depth of field of a wide angle lens is apparently better than a longer lens, the subjects you are shooting will appear smaller in the frame, so you will have to magnify the image to read the details on the individual cars.
Also no. because unless you are shooting a very fast shutter speed, like 1/4000th or faster, there will be some blur in the lettering on the cars.
The railroad solves this problem by using a flash to expose the data on the side of each car and shoots only the data, not the whole of the train.
If you are using film, you will have to do some tests shooting the cars and other features of the train and its environ.
Depending upon the speed of the train, you may find you will have to pan your camera as the train passes by to get the data you wish to have in sharp focus, but then you will miss the next car or two
