I have a Binocular question?
I found a pair of binoculars in a closet that my dad bought years ago, and it says on them
8×40 WA , 430 feet at 1000 yards. It’s rainy today so I can’t really use them for much to test them, but I also would like to know what this means in technical terms

the lenses are 40 mm
What does this mean for looking at the night sky? What could I see?
What about nature viewing in the mountains, or forest?
Let’s take these piece by piece:
8x — they are 8 power; they magnify the view so that it’s 8 times as big as it looks without them
40 — the objective lenses (the big ones that are at the far-forward end as you are using them) have an aperture, or optical opening, 40mm in diameter
WA — Wide-Angle; their apparent field of view (apparent angular diameter of the view you see through them, is wider than most, ‘regular,’ binoculars) — the last spec (see the next item in this list) implies that the apparent field of view is about 65º, making the actual angular field of view a bit more than 8º
430 ft at 1000 yd — the actual field of view; when looking at a scene that is 1000 yd away, the binoculars will show you a 430-ft-wide circle of the scene at that distance. At any other distance, the width of the view will be exactly proportional to that. At 100 yd, it will show a 43 ft-wide view.
