what do the strength numbers mean on binoculars?
such as 25X50 w. 4.4 degree field
25 is the power of the lens. Meaning your magnification is 25 times normal.
50 is the diameter of the lens. The bigger the number the more light can come in. As magnification goes up, you need more light to make the optics work correctly. 25×40 is the same magnification as 25×50, but the higher diameter lens will give you a brighter and sharper view.
The width of the field is expressed either as an angular measure in degrees, or as a linear width, in feet, of the viewing area at a distance of 1000 yards. You can convert from angular field to linear field by multiplying the angle in degrees by 52.5. so 4.4×52.5=means you have a field of view of 231 feet.
