How to look for “high quality” lenses for Nikon D90 ?
I know that for the Canon SLR lenses, the “L” lenses (marked with a red ring around the lens) are the “high quality lesnses”. Are there any such markings you can look for on Nikkor lenses or Nikon compatible lenses?
Nikon doesn’t make any obvious design differences between lens groups. They like to be more subtle.
Look at the front of the lens & you’ll see on their “L” level lenses a gold stripe around the barrel right behind where the lens hood would snap on. On the 14-24f2/8 the hood is built in so the gold stripe is where the hood looks like it attaches.
They don’t seem to do it on their giant lenses. I guess when you buy a 10 pound lens for $5000+ it should be obvious enough, they don’t feel the need to mark it.
Update: “ED” is a type of glass used to significantly reduce chromatic aberration in telephoto lenses. It’s been used in better telephoto lenses for years. It has nothing to do with distinguishing an amateur from a pro lens, although it is in all their current pro lenses (including wide angles).
